The George Eliot Letters is based on original manuscripts in 37 li braries and more than 60 private collections. The most extensive is the Yale Collection containing more than 800 letters and all but one of her journals and diaries. It is used here for the first time since Cross wrote in 1885. The complete seven-volume edition includes 5,106 letters and extracts from journals, over 2,100 of them by George Eliot and the remainder to her or about her. It includes sub stantial correspondences of George Henry Lewes and the Black woods, her publishers. The index to the entire edition appears in the last volume.
